Maths

We believe that mathematics is an integral part of learning that embraces every aspect of life.  We want all of our pupils to experience all aspects of mathematics and develop a sense of curiosity and enthusiasm for the subject.

We encourage a growth mindset in our children and embrace the making of mistakes as a perfect tool for learning.  We provide a wide range of opportunities to broaden pupils’ knowledge and deepen their understanding of mathematics.  We strive for all pupils to believe and achieve and recognise themselves as mathematicians.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.
  • solve problems by applying their understanding to a variety of problems, including in unfamiliar contexts and model real-life scenarios, preparing them for later life.
  • be self-motivated in seeking challenges and have a resilient approach to working.
  • believe that mathematics is something we can all do.

Writing

At QMPS we believe that writing is very much linked to the development of vocabulary. We teach writing in our school through the Talk for Writing approach. This ensures our pupils learn new words, are story tellers and rehearse their sentences orally, learning the tune of a text, allowing them to feel more confident and motivated to write, before putting pen to paper. The Talk for writing sequence also enables us to exemplify to our pupils, the progress they are making towards becoming successful and proud writers.

Reading

Specific information on how we teach reading at QMPS and our reading routines can be found on this page

Science

At Queen Margaret Primary School, we value Science. WE ARE SCIENTISTS! A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world with a clear progression in the key scientific knowledge and concepts. Pupils are taught to ask questions, make observations and record their findings. They are encouraged to learn from their mistakes, making changes and corrections based on what they’ve already tried and what other people have tried.  Pupils develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

PSHCE

At Queen Margaret Primary School, we aim to enable children to develop the knowledge, skills, attributes and understanding they will need to lead a safe and healthy lifestyle, play active roles as citizens and make informed choices about their lives both now and in the future.

We are committed to providing opportunities for children to enhance their personal, social, emotional, spiritual, moral and cultural development, and believe it is an essential part of the curriculum and values of our school.

We understand the importance of maintaining emotional and physical wellbeing, to take responsibility for their actions, to feel confident about themselves, to develop a sense of belonging and purpose and to develop healthy relationships both now and in the future.

R.E

Religious Education is highly valued at QMPS.  We aim to ignite a sense of awe and wonder in our children as they seek to discover meaning in the world in which they live. We foster curiosity and challenge children’s thinking through thought-provoking questions about such things as the meaning of life, beliefs about God and what it means to be human.  We enable children to learn about and from religions and world views, and help develop personal opinions and ideas. We believe that learning in RE should help children understand values such as mutual respect and tolerance and begins to prepare our children for their future place in society.

Geography

At Queen Margaret Primary School, we value Geography. WE ARE GEOGRAPHERS! We believe that our pupils should have a high-quality geography education that inspires a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Our Geography curriculum aims to equip pupils with a sense of place, be it their own locality or the diversity found in other places throughout the world. Our pupils will develop the Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills that will enable them to compare and contrast localities and explain how Earth's features, at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.

History

At Queen Margaret, we value History. WE ARE HISTORIANS!

We believe that our pupils should have a high-quality history education that will help them gain knowledge of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It will ignite curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching will allow pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, compare evidence and develop perspective. Our History curriculum will help pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity. History at QMPS is a tool to inspire pupils by allowing opportunity for them to learn about inspirational individuals from the past and their achievements.

Design Technology

As Designers and Technologists, we value Design Technology.

At QMPS Design and Technology is an inspiring and practical subject, using creativity, innovation and imagination, pupils design, make and evaluate products that solve real life problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others' needs and wants. They acquire a range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines including mathematics, science, computing and art.

P.E

At Queen Margaret Primary School, we value Physical Education. WE ARE ACTIVE!

Our Physical Education curriculum inspires children to have success in physically-demanding activities. Children are exposed to competitive as well as creative activities that enable them to become better all-round participants. Opportunities are given for children to become aware of the benefits of regular exercise for health and well-being on them as an individual. Physical Education at QMPS provides the chance for character building, through the use of school values that underpins all our learning.

French

At QMPS, we are linguists! Our children develop a curiosity about and understanding of the wider world by learning the language and customs of our nearest neighbour (France).

They communicate in French with growing confidence and knowledge of vocabulary.

They appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in French and learn to read and write French with growing understanding and fluency.

Music

At QMPS, we are musicians! Our children develop a love of music and song as they grow in imagination, confidence and creativity.  We believe that it is important for our children to listen to and appreciate a wide range of high quality music. Our curriculum offers opportunities to reflect, perform and compose, working with others and developing their own interests and talents.

Art & Design

At QMPS, we are ARTISTS!  We believe that a high-quality art and design curriculum should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the basic drawing, painting and modelling skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think more critically. They should also begin to develop an understanding of how art and design is reflected in history.
